If you are having a baby, thinking of having a baby, have friends that are having a baby, like to practice making a baby, and/or are interested in women's health issues, etc this is a must see movie.

Birth: it's a miracle. A rite of passage. A natural part of life. But more than anything, birth is a business. Compelled to find answers after a disappointing birth experience with her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to examine and question the way American women have babies. The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and shocking statistics about the current maternity care system. When director Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal. Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potentially catastrophic medical emergency? Official Site. Directed by Abby Epstein. Executive Producer: Ricki Lake. Running time: 87 mins
If you miss the movie, get a copy of The American Way of Birth by Jessica Mitford.

Re: The Business of Being Born - A Must See Movie
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 8:53 PMI am a huge birth "reform" advocate if you will. I had my daughter at home and am having my second baby at home any day now. As a doula, mother, and lover of birth, I feel that this is an issue often overlooked in women's politics and social advocacy. the way that women are treated while pregnant and in labor in this culture is very disturbing. So much fear and doubt surrounds the capability of women's bodies and minds. -

Re: The Business of Being Born - A Must See Movie
Thu, January 10, 2008 - 11:33 AMok I ve seen the and to the risk of being flamed ,sincerely i did not think much of it... There are many more good movies to promote Birth and Midwives that were much better done..
IMO a lot of bla bla useless, a focus on Ricky Lake and her Girl friend... The title promotes teh wrong impression It should have be named. "My birth and my GF birth and oh BTW I had a MW.... and what marketing wheezes we are!!!"
Sorry if i offended anyone...
oops I am a Midwife... (CNM just like them..) -

Re: The Business of Being Born - A Must See Movie
Fri, January 11, 2008 - 8:02 AMI just watched Birth into Being last night and it was fantastic. I have not seen the Rikki Lake movie yet, but I am hesitant to be so critical. Most women in this culture approach birth from a perspective of fear, pain, and mystery. I was lucky to be raised in a home birthing environment, and therefore had a slightly different outlook. But let's face it, many women do not hear anything of birth except references to pain. Rikki Lake was no different. So her quest to find the positive birth experience that she did not have the first time around is not only something that a lot of American women will be able to relate to, but also takes some courage in this culture. I commend her for tackling a subject that is usually left to people like Jenny McCarthy and her Belly Laughs book, which portrays birth from the usual "it hurts, it sucks, get the damn needle" perspective. -

Re: The Business of Being Born - A Must See Movie
Fri, January 11, 2008 - 8:30 PMit also has the potential to hit the mainstream culture which is where this information and perspective is so desperately needed...
it is people like jenny mc carthy and rikki lake that can reach the women out there that never even think beyond the obgyn/ epidural/ episiotomy/ c-section/ flat on your back/ medical interventionists.............etc box to think that birth can and should be on (as much as possible) the terms of the women giving birth.
nothing is perfect and accessing the mainstream means being more broadly accessible and this film is able to access the mainstream in all its broadness.
